This nice heatmap shows the relative number and result of every NBA field goal attempt in five years by position to the basket. It was created by analysing all games in NBA over a five-year-period. It shows a nice amount of symmetry. You can see how successful shots behind the 3-Point-Line are, as well as the mid-range-jumps. Also shots from the middle seem to be more successfull (because of the backboard?).

Here you can see the paper where the chart is from. There are also charts for individual players, e.g. Dirk Nowitzki.

Diese schöne Heatmap zeigt die Häufigkeit und das durchschnittliche Ergebnis von Korbwurfversuchen im Basketball nach Position des Spielers zum Korb. Dabei wurden alle NBA-Spiele in einem Zeitraum von fünf Jahren ausgewertet. Abgesehen von der beachtlichen Symmetrie ist auch die hohe Erfolgsquote von Würfen hinter der Dreierlinie, von Mid-Range-Jumps aber auch von Würfen die direkt senkrecht zum Brett erfolgen (Weil der Ball hier auch senkrecht vom Brett abprallt?) gut zu sehen.

Das Paper, aus dem die Arbeit stammt, ist hier zu finden. Dort sind auch Auswertungen für einzelne Spieler (mit dabei: Dirk Nowitzki) zu sehen.

World’s population by Latitude and Longitude – Weltbevölkerung nach Längen- und Breitengrad

The first blog entry shows the distribution of world’s population – by latitude and longitude. It’s clearly visible that the northern hemisphere outweighs the southern hemisphere by population (as well as the eastern hemisphere does outweigh the western hemisphere), but take into consideration that the northern hemisphere accounts for almost 70% of earth’s landmass. Yet the chart points to the most populated countries: China and India.

Der erste Eintrag dieses Blogs zeigt die Verteilung der Weltbevölkerung nach Längen- und Breitengrad. Es lässt sich klar erkennen, dass die Bevölkerung der Nordhalbkugel wesentlich größer ist als die der Südhalbkugel. Das liegt aber auch an der ungleichen Verteilung der Landfläche, fast 70% der Landfläche der Erde liegt auf der Nordhalbkugel. Dennoch gibt die Grafik einen Hinweis auf die bevölkerungsreichsten Länder: China und Indien.
